Metis Nation Studies: Caring for Native Wildlife As A Rehabilitator
Caring for native wildlife is the primary responsibility of an animal rehabilitator. As a rehabilitator, you will care for sick and injured animals. The animals should regain their strength and health; after that, the animals will be released into their native habitats. State agencies regulate the activities of animal rehabilitators. Before you can become a licensed and experienced rehabilitator, you need to undergo a series of training.
Being a rehabilitator is rigorous work but it is a very rewarding task. You can either work alone or you can work in a group under an established rescue centre. If you love the challenge, this might be the task for you.
Metis Nation Studies: Animal Rehabilitators
States have different policies regarding animal rehabilitators. Contact the state’s department which is concerned with the protection or management of native wildlife so that you can determine the requirements. The apprenticeship training hours and qualifying exams are dependent on the state you live in. You must be able to fulfil all the requirements to become an animal rehabilitator. Once you’re through, you can apply for the permit.
Try to read various books and publications on housing and treating wildlife and about the rehabilitation of wildlife. Collect current information because it will be of good use to you. Find a local wildlife rehabilitation centre and present yourself as a volunteer. It’s easy to find the centres and you can do it online to make a fast search. The best way to learn all the things about animal rehabilitation is to do the actual job.
If you know several experienced animal rehabilitators, you can talk to them. They can provide you with the needed info on how to become a licensed rehabber. These individuals can easily point you in the right direction so that you know what to do.
Symposiums, conferences, and training sessions are held for animal rehabilitators. Always be on the lookout for this stuff because you can learn a lot about being an animal rehabilitator. The NWRA or the National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association usually holds annual conferences and training sessions for those who would like to become animal rehabilitators.
If you join NWRA, you will be able to get a comprehensive source of info, networking, and support. After you’ve passed the necessary requirements, training, and examinations, you will be issued a permit as a licensed animal rehabilitator. Once you’re a rehabber, you have to make sure that you’re properly
insured. Being a rehabber is hazardous work.
You’ll never know what’s going to happen especially when you’re already handling wild animals. Check if you’re covered. You can also check your personal health coverage so that in case you meet an accident or you get sick, you will be covered.
Metis Nation Studies: Legal Requirements
There are times when licensed animal rehabilitators decide to organize their own rehabilitation service. If you would like to run your own non-profit animal rehab organization, you need to hire a good lawyer so that you can comply with all the legal requirements. The lawyer will assist you in preparing all the legal matters attached to running a rehabilitation centre.
Animal rehabilitators are needed nowadays to protect and save native wildlife. They are the only ones who are capable of caring for native wildlife. Know the requirements and qualifications so that you can already start your way in becoming a good animal rehabilitator.

With the use of the internet, try to search for the native wildlife in your locality. You can’t just attract any native wildlife you like. For instance, if you live in New York, you can’t possibly attract a moose found in Alabama, right? Search the internet and find out what animals are likely found in your area. That way, the whole ‘attracting plan’ will be a success because you know what you’re targeting.
You must know that not all native wildlife species are ‘good guys’. You see, there are also ‘bad’ ones. You must never attract the bad ones because you will only have trouble with them. Individuals who are interested in attracting and caring for native animals are already aware that some native wildlife comes out at night and the rest at daytime. You can go night viewing so that you will discover what animals are
lurking in the dark.
Once you’ve carefully devised your plan of action, it will be easier to carry it out. If you have a wide lawn space, you can use that to attract native wildlife. Just make sure that you see most of the space from your house so that you can monitor the animals lurking in your area.
If your spaces don’t have any plants, make sure that you plant trees or even shrubs. You should also provide food and water. If space is much larger, it is a good idea to put a fish pond. The trees and shrubs will serve as the animals’ cover and somehow they will feel protected and so they will not hesitate to go to your lawn area.
Aside from the landscaping, you will also need to put watering holes or a bath. You can even use throwing disks and then put some little stones in it. Smaller creatures will surely visit your yard. Put the different feeders in the area and put food in it too. During summer, you can toss hummingbird seeds in the yard or place it in bird feeders. Try to use high quality feeds.
Oftentimes, squirrels will go to your yard and the feeders can’t hold them out. Give the squirrels cracked corns or even sunflower seeds. Place their food away from feeders and give them their very own source of water.
You can’t attract native wildlife very fast. You have to learn to be patient and soon, your efforts will be rewarded. Once an animal visits your place, others will surely follow. So just wait for them to come one by one. Don’t forget to put food every day and keep the source of water clean all the time. Attracting and
caring for native wildlife has never been this easy.
